Every year, in Great Britain alone, thousands of people die of lung disease or develop asthma because of airborne contaminants breathed at work. LEV (dust extraction) is an excellent way of controlling airborne contaminants, so that workshop air remains clean and safe for all.

What is LEV (Dust Extraction)

LEV is an extract ventilation system that takes dusts, mists, gases, vapour or fumes out of the air so that they can’t be breathed in. Properly designed LEV will:

  • Collect the air that contains the contaminants.
  • Make sure they are contained and taken away from people.
  • Clean the air (if necessary) and get rid of the contaminants safely.

Why Install LEV (Dust Extraction)

Dust and fumes created by machinery in educational and training workshops is a serious hazard. You have a legal responsibility to ensure that exposure to airborne contaminants is minimised and well controlled.  Effective LEV carries away airborne contaminants before they can be breathed in, protecting your students and staff.

How Often Should We Test LEV

Once LEV is installed, it is important to ensure it is maintained in efficient working order and continues to provide the necessary protection. You should schedule a yearly examination of your equipment and keep this record for at least 5 years. In addition, you should have information on the installed LEV system to confirm it provides adequate protection, which should be kept for the life of the equipment.
